Censorship in Books and the Publishing Industry Overlooking Non-Traditional Authors

In an age where diverse perspectives are more critical than ever, censorship in books and the marginalization of non-traditional authors continues to challenge the publishing industry. This writeup breifly explores the history and impact of censorship, the challenges faced by non-traditional authors, and provides recommendations to support diverse voices in literature.

Historical Context of Book Censorship
Book censorship has a long history, with numerous examples of literature being banned for challenging societal norms, political ideologies, or religious beliefs. Notable examples include:

  • "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee: Banned for its portrayal of racial tensions and              use of racial slurs.
  • "The Diary of Anne Frank" by Anne Frank: Banned in some schools for its explicit                    content and portrayal of the Holocaust.

These instances, and many found throughout the years and in the recent news, highlight the ongoing struggle for freedom of expression and the need to protect diverse voices in literature.

Modern Book Banning Trends
In recent years, book bans have continued to affect access to literature. For example, Julianne Moore's "Freckleface Strawberry" was banned in some schools for its portrayal of bullying and self-acceptance. These bans limit the availability of diverse perspectives and hinder the ability to engage with important social issues.

In 2024 and continuing into this year, we have seen article after article highlighting the attack on literature across the U.S.  Going on, without fighting back, will have devastating consequences.

Overlooking Non-Traditional Authors (Another Example of Censorship)
Non-traditional authors, including LGBTQIA+, BIPOC, and other underrepresented groups, often face significant barriers in the publishing industry. A study by Lee & Low Books found that only 7% of children's books published in 2019 were written by Black, Latinx, and Native authors. This lack of representation results in a limited range of voices and perspectives in literature.

Think about the additional impacts to future writers from these communities.  Would it be encouraging to pursue the dream of becoming an author if you didn't see anyone remotely like you in this space?
